Getting Your Boat Ready for Summer
1. Inspect the Hull
Check for cracks, blisters, or other damage. Repair any issues before putting the boat in the water.
2. Clean the Boat
Wash the exterior and clean the interior. Remove any mildew or debris that built up during storage.
3. Check the Engine
Inspect the engine for any signs of wear. Change the oil, check fuel lines, and replace old filters.
4. Test the Battery
Charge and test the boat’s battery. Replace it if it no longer holds a charge.
5. Inspect Safety Gear
Ensure life jackets, fire extinguishers, flares, and other safety equipment are on board and in good condition.
Test all lights to make sure they work, especially if you’ll be boating at night.
7. Update Documentation
Make sure your boat registration and insurance are current.
8. Test Electronics
Power on and test GPS, radio, depth finder, and other onboard electronics.
9. Inspect Trailer
If you use a trailer, check the tires, lights, and brakes. Make sure it’s roadworthy.
10. Take a Test Run
Before a long trip, take the boat out for a short run to ensure everything is functioning properly.
