Safe Boating Tips
General Safety
- Wear a life jacket – Ensure every person on board has a properly fitting U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket.
- Take a boating safety course – Knowledge is your best defense against accidents.
- Check the weather – Avoid boating in storms, high winds, or rapidly changing weather.
- File a float plan – Let someone know where you’re going and when you expect to return.
Equipment & Maintenance
- Perform a pre-departure checklist – Check fuel, oil, battery, lights, radio, and emergency equipment.
- Carry essential safety gear – Fire extinguisher, whistle/horn, flares, first aid kit, flashlight, anchor, and a bailer or bilge pump.
- Use navigation lights at night – Be visible to other boats and follow lighting regulations.
Operation & Behavior
- Don’t drink and boat – Alcohol impairs judgment and balance; it’s a leading cause of boating accidents.
- Keep a proper lookout – Watch for swimmers, kayakers, other boats, and floating debris.
- Know and obey navigation rules – Understand right-of-way, no-wake zones, and channel markers.
- Drive at a safe speed – Adjust for conditions, traffic, and visibility.
- Be cautious when anchoring – Drop anchor from the bow, not the stern, to avoid capsizing.
Passengers & Special Situations
- Supervise children at all times – Keep kids in life jackets and within arm’s reach.
- Secure loose items – Prevent slipping or tripping hazards.
- Stay seated while underway – Avoid falls overboard.
- Check local laws – Know specific regulations for the area you’re boating in.
