In Honor of Martin Luther King

The Nautical Spirit of Character

Upon the tides, a vessel sails,
Her hull adorned with weathered trails.
No flag nor crest defines her course,
But the steady helm of a moral force.

Beneath her decks, all voices rise,
A symphony beneath wide skies.
No station, rank, nor wealth divides,
For hearts are judged by what resides.

Her compass points to distant shores,
Where justice dwells and love restores.
The storms may rage, the waters churn,
But through the trials, wisdom’s earned.

The crew is bound by common creed,
To meet each soul by word and deed.
Their measure lies not in their face,
But in the depth of truth’s embrace.

From every port, they gather near,
Their varied tongues a song sincere.
For on this ship, no hue holds sway,
All chart the stars in the same array.

Through foggy nights and tempests’ cry,
They keep the dream that will not die.
A world where all may stand as peers,
Unshackled by their doubts or fears.

So let us sail with steadfast heart,
And play in life our noble part.
For oceans vast and skies so blue,
Demand the best in me and you.
