Norwegian Cruise Line officially unveiled the name and first images of its next-generation cruise ships, the first of which is due to set sail in 2022: Project Leonardo.Carrying 3,300 passengers apiece, Norwegian will build a total of four Project Leonardo ships between 2022 and 2025. The line has an option for a further two ships that can be ordered from Italian shipyard Fincantieri, if the company chooses to do so.In a press conference at the Seatrade Cruise Global Convention in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings CEO Frank del Rio also unveiled the first renderings of these Project Leonardo ships, which will represent an entirely new class of ship for the line.Del Rio stated that the new ships were designed from the ground up to enhance the overall guest experience aboard Norwegian Cruise Line. “We’re doing our best to elevate the cruise experience,” he said, “[We want to] highlight the value that is Norwegian Cruise Line.”The new Project Leonardo ships will build upon the flexibility and freedom offered to guests by Norwegian’s new Breakaway Plus class ships. On the technical side of things, all four Project Leonardo ships will be highly energy-efficient, making them suitable for deployment to areas with strict emissions controls like California’s West Coast. The line states that optimizing fuel consumption will be a major priority with these Project Leonardo ships. At this point, that’s all we know about Project Leonardo; Norwegian plans to release more details on the ships technical and hotel features and amenities at a later date. One thing is for sure, though: the face of Norwegian Cruise Line is changing once again, and these new ships look like they’ll be worth the wait.Happy cruising.
