Hypothermia is a real threat for boaters, and one that can potentially call you. Falling into cold water and staying there for an extended period of time is one major cause of hypothermia, but not the only one. Just being exposed to the cold for long periods can also be a cause. The key to avoiding the onset of hypothermia is to limit your exposure to the cold, both in and out of the water.

Dress properly and take safety precautions. Learn to recognize the symptoms, such as uncontrollable shivering, motor skill impairment, cloudy thinking, etc.
